17 Critical Mistakes Intelligent, Confident, And Well-Dressed Men Never Make

9,999 failed attempts.

Allegedly it took Thomas Edison 10,000 attempts to invent the lightbulb.

Rather than seeing this as a mistake, he’s be known to say that he’s found 9,999 ways that don’t work.

Talk about a positive perspective!

You might be thinking, “What the hell does this have to do with men’s style?”

When trying something new like upgrading your image it’s common to make a few mistakes along the way.

When I first began figuring out what works and what doesn’t when it comes to style I made a ton of costly mistakes.

Buying clothes either too big or too small, holding back when it came to investing a little extra in an item which lead to buying lesser quality products, and even focusing way too much on what’s trendy.

These are just a few of the mistakes I made along the way. To help you avoid throwing away your hard earned money I’ve compiled this list.

Give it a read to avoid the most common mistakes men make when learning how to dress well.

1) Paying more just for a brand name

You can look just as good in a suit that costs $300 as you would in a suit that costs $3,000. Most people won’t be able to tell the difference either.

2) Overlooking the importance of good fit

Settling for just ‘good enough’ would be selling yourself short. Be mindful of how your wardrobe fits because this is the difference between dressing well or not.

3) Wearing too many colours

There’s no rhyme or reason to an outfit that’s made up of too many colours. Onlookers eyes don’t know where to focus (ideally on your best physical assets) and there’s no cohesion to the outfit. A mistake definitely worth avoiding!

4) Wearing cross-trainers rather than a casual sneaker

You see this one too often. In an attempt to infuse a little street style into their casual wardrobe, many guys miss the mark by wearing a pair of sneakers best reserved for running as opposed to a lifestyle sneaker.

5) Graphic T’s with blazers

This is just a confused look. If you’re going to dress up then fully commit. If you’re going for a more casual look then it defeats the purpose to wear a blazer.

6) Not hemming their pants

An all too common mistake that instantly makes a man look sloppy. The excess fabric often bunches up around their ankles or it drags behind their shoes and ends up getting dirty, frays, and ruins the pants.

7) Forgetting to cut the pocket threads on new suit jackets

This one may not seem as obvious. You’re ok to leave the two side pockets stitched shut since this will eliminate the temptation to stuff anything in them making your jacket bulge awkwardly. Do make sure to cut open the breast pocket, especially if you wear pocket squares.

8) Are ok with wearing wrinkled clothing when they go out

Ironing or steaming your clothes can be tedious but that effort is worth it. Stepping out into public with wrinkled clothing sends the message that this guy doesn’t care about he presents himself so why should anyone else.

9) Matching too many pieces in their outfits

Unless you’re planning to shoot a rap video there’s no need for your outfit to match from head-to-toe. Yes it should be made up of colours that complement one another but to make sure your hat matches your shoes which matches your shirt is excessive.

10) Building a wardrobe strictly around what’s trending

If you’re ok with throwing your money away year after year then feel free to take this approach. Trends change so frequently in fashion that it’s hard to keep up. This also means that your look will always be changing rather than evolving.

Instead of bouncing from one trend to the next build your wardrobe around the essentials.

11) White socks with dress shoes

A serious rookie mistake! If this list was ranked this would easily be in the top 3. Your entire look would be ruined even if it is well put together, you could’ve invested a lot of money into it, and all you did was make this one mistake.

12) Poorly maintained facial hair

Facial hair is so common these days. The maintenance of it is where many guys come up short. A sloppy beard runs a fine line between looking cool and trendy or like you’ve had a rough week that hasn’t given you much time to take care of yourself.

13) Wearing both suspenders and a belt

They both serve the same purpose. This is one of the quickest ways to lose credibility when it comes to your personal style. Wearing one or the other is more than enough to keep your pants in place so there’s no need to double down.

14) Fastening ALL of the buttons on their suit jacket

This one’s all about paying attention to the details. Closing all of the buttons on your jacket can create the illusion that you’re carrying a few extra pounds around your midsection. You always want to leave the bottom one undone and leave the jacket open when you sit.

15) Not matching their shoes with their belt

A classic mistake that may not always seem obvious. In casual settings it’s not a big deal if they don’t match one another. If you’re in a more formal setting and are likely to wear a suit then make sure that they’re matching since your belt is more likely to be on display.

16) Update their wardrobe less frequently than they should

“If it’s not broken, why fix it?” A common phrase we’ve all heard before. When it comes to style if your wardrobe still has pieces from your college days there’s a good chance that you’re not dressing appropriately for your age.

17) Take style advice from anyone and everyone

Would you take fitness advice from an out of shape personal trainer? Or how to live a healthy live from a sick doctor? Not likely. The same principle applies when it comes to taking style advice. Consider where it’s coming from and what makes them a credible source for you to learn from.

Last Thoughts:

What defines good style is a series of subtle details.

Though some of what’s been mentioned may seem minor, it truly does make a difference in how your look comes together.

Your style can easily be elevated. It doesn’t take much to go from good to great.
