A Gentleman’s Guide To Stepping Out Of Your Comfort Zone With Your Sense Of Style

Posted on Posted in Style

That first step…

It’s the scariest one to take.

Especially when you’re doing something that comes with NO safety net.

That’s how I felt back in the day when I started experimenting with my style.

The thing is that there’s no hiding – when your image changes, everyone notices.

It’s out in the open.

Thoughts like, “What will people think of me?” or “Maybe I’m doing this wrong, I should just stick with what I already know” would often cross my mind.

The process of learning how to dress well and feel more comfortable in my skin was a character building one (to say the least).

For the sake of being noticed the younger (and insecure) version of myself would often wear bright colours and attention grabbing graphics in an attempt to stand out and rebel.

Though it worked, this approach grew old quick.

Today this no longer makes sense since my goal as a young professional is to appear approachable and be taken seriously.

Before my rant gets carried away, the point I’m trying to make is that creating the image you’ve always envisioned for yourself is a journey.

One that requires you to question the status quo which also means being uncomfortable more often than you’d like.

“To help you along this journey, here’s A Gentleman’s Guide To Stepping Out Of Your Comfort Zone With Your Sense Of Style”
They Don’t Get Caught Up In Trends

Gentlemen know that fashion and style are two very different things.

Fashion is what we typically see in magazines and on the runways at fashion shows.

This means that it’s driven by trends that change frequently throughout the year.

Take a second to think about this quote, “A gentleman is one who puts more into the world than he takes from it.”

How does this relate to men’s fashion?

Well, the documentary Minimalism does a great job shedding light on how wasteful we are as a society (especially in the world of fast fashion).

Rather than updating their designs four times a year, large companies are now focusing on releasing product 52 times a year!

Circling back to the quote I mentioned earlier, this is not only wasteful (and harmful to the environment) but it’s also costly.

Gentlemen understand that style is a personal reflection of who you are as an individual.

It’s defined by your unique personality and generally remains constant unless you choose to undergo a complete style makeover (which is the aim of our 1-on-1 program).

So rather than focusing on what’s trendy and always changing their look, a gentleman tend to take the timeless approach to men’s style.

This means investing in high quality/well-made clothing that’s stood the test of time.

Items like dark denim and navy suits have been in heavy rotation for decades.

Your chances of being well-dressed in the long-term can easily be achieved by investing in a timeless wardrobe.

For A Gentleman, Risk Taking Is An Everyday Habit

It’s a major key to stepping  out of your style comfort zone.

Knowing that they may get it wrong, look bad, or draw more attention than they’re used to, a gentleman willingly takes risks with his style.

It could be as simple as wearing a bold new colour that they wouldn’t normally wear.

Or it could be as significant as completely making over their appearance.

Remember – taking risks is a sign of confidence.

A trait that defines all gentlemen because they’re not afraid to stand out or speak their mind.

It’s also a trait of anyone who’s viewed as a leader (and it’s one of the most attractive traits you could possess too).

Dressing well is ALL about taking risks.

That’s why well-dressed men stand out from everyone else.

Very few men are willing to take the same chances a gentleman is. Making them more memorable.

Gentlemen Are Ok With Making Mistakes

This one’s arguably the most important tip.

A limiting belief that holds too many men back from improving their style is that they’re afraid of getting it wrong and looking bad.

Here’s the harsh reality of it.

When you’re learning a new skill, it’s highly unlikely that you will get it right in the first few attempts.

This is especially true when it comes to men’s style.

Since it’s an extension of your unique personality, there isn’t a black or white way to approach changing your image.

They Live By The Words “Patience Is A Virtue”

You may have heard this one before.

In the context of men’s style this means being ok with knowing that learning how to dress well takes time.

It’s not an overnight process.

Learning how to dress well involves a great deal of trial and error.

With an endless supply of information available about men’s style, it can be overwhelming to figure out what works for your unique personality and what doesn’t.

Your life will be made much easier by accepting that it will take time for you to step out of your comfort zone when it comes to your sense of style.

This is often the result of deciding on your own individual sense of style and then figuring out how to actually create it.

A Gentleman Is Always Willing To Ask For Help

Ego is the enemy.

You may have heard this before.

Far too often men have too much pride to ask for help.

There’s a reason that men asking for directions is a cliche joke that sitcoms always use (uncle Phil did this on an episode of The Fresh Prince I saw recently haha).

Gentlemen set aside their pride because they know getting help will help them get to their goals faster.

Doing so cuts the learning curve significantly, saves them from years of frustration and potentially giving up their dreams.

Remember those Dos Equis commercials with the “most interesting man in the world?”

He spoke multiple languages, went on countless adventures, and was very well-dressed.

Yes he is a fictional character but there are men out there who live like this.

Do you think they figured all of that out on their own?

These gentlemen all had the help of a credible expert – someone with proven results.

One of the best analogies for this is hiring a personal trainer.

If your goal is to get in shape, you seek out the help of somebody who can create a plan specifically for your unique situation.

The reason that this works so well is because the person showing you the ropes ideally would’ve been in the same position you are.

This makes it easier for both parties to relate with one another – making the process that much easier
