What To Wear On A First Date Without Looking Like You’re Trying Too Hard

Posted on Posted in Style

Today’s the day!

Your relentless pursuit has finally paid off.

The cute girl you’ve had your eyes on for a while now has agreed to go out on a date with you tonight.

That’s great, isn’t it?

Of course…and then your nerves set in.

There’s a lot of excitement to see her tonight but you’re not sure what to wear and don’t want to make a bad impression.

FirstDate

Your style should make you come across as intelligent, charismatic, stylish, confident, etc. Ultimately making her feel comfortable and leads to great chemistry.

You’ve worked hard to get to this point and the last thing you want to do is mess it up.

I’ve been there countless times before too. Don’t worry, I’ve got your back.

In my early 20’s it seemed like the right thing to do would be to overdress.

I would opt for a suit jacket with my best jeans and a pair of dress shoes. I would ask myself….

“How could this go wrong?!”

There’s a few ways…

First off, if her outfit doesn’t match your dress-code she could feel upstaged. Not very gentlemanly is it?

Secondly, it looks like you’re trying too hard.  Nobody wants to be that guy.

The suit jacket and jeans look I was going for came across as trying too hard and was often too much for the atmosphere the date was in.

I realized that what you wear on a first date IS important but how you feel in it is MORE important.

Standing out as a well-dressed man can be advantageous but only if it’s done right.

The solution I’ve recently discovered is the smart-casual approach to style when going out on dates.  It’s worked wonders for me!

Not only does the girl you’re on the date with appreciate your style but you’re turning heads and getting compliments from the bartender, waitress, and other people around you.

This only raises her interest level in you as a result.

Sounds pretty good doesn’t it?

Here’s What You Need To Do…

The smart-casual approach guarantees you’ll look great without being over or under-dressed.

You’ll be prepared for nearly every environment you may find yourself in.

You’ll need slim fitting dark denim, a selection of causal button-up shirts, a clean pair of minimalist sneakers, or a simple pair of dress shoes/boots.

Need to know more? This style guide outlines the essential pieces every man needs.

Optional pieces would include a navy or grey blazer, polo shirts, and knit sweaters.

With this rotation of clothes in a variety of neutral colours you’ll have no shortage of outfits to create.

You will also have a versatile wardrobe that will work for you outside of your dating life too.

Last Thoughts:

Ultimately your end goal will be to create a wardrobe that you can rely on no matter where the night takes you.

Aim to have your best personality traits shine through your style. Characteristics like intelligence, confidence, and creativity are a few that come to mind.

You can easily achieve this by sticking to the smart-casual approach.
