Not Happy With Your Style? It Could Have Something To Do With Your Friends

Posted on Posted in Style

Think about this for a second…

You’re the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.

Take a minute to let that sink in.

Who are most of your days spent with and how do they influence you?

Have you ever noticed how people who like to party a lot hang out with other people who like to party?

It’s no coincidence.

Ideally you’re already spending the majority of your time around the people who bring out the best in you.

They’re the ones cheering you on when you’re tired, frustrated, and ready to quit.

I’ve been lucky enough to be surrounded by the founders of Playfield Co., Social Confidence Mastery, and Newbie Fitness Academy.

Not only are they building their own brands but these guys also make sure that style is a high priority.

Knowing that each of them brings their A-game every single day when it comes to their appearance pushes me too.

Without a circle of well-dressed friends, who knows if I’d be in a position to talk about men’s style.

Not only are they inspirational but they also offer great advice when needed.

Now let’s talk about Why You’re Only As Well-Dressed As Your Friends

You’re Afraid Of Being Alienated

Nobody wants to be the black sheep of the group.

Who wants to risk drifting away from your friends? Especially if you all get along so well.

This is easily one of the most common reasons why most guys are afraid of changing up their style

It’s especially true after graduating from university.

At this stage in our lives it becomes harder to meet new people.

What I’ve learned over the years is that you just have to go for it!

When I first stepped out of my comfort zone to c improve my style, it made me an easy target to be made fun of.

Gradually my image improved.

Eventually the jokes turned into compliments as good style became part of my personal brand.

So instead of being teased I became the guy my friends would come to for style advice.

The moral of the story?

Stay persistent and the odds will always turn in your favour.

You Have No Reason To Push Yourself

There’s no motivation to rock the boat.

Maybe it’s a basic survival instinct — this would mean separating yourself from the “tribe.”

If that’s the case, chances are you won’t want to shake things up when it comes to your style even though you know it could be better.

Take a second to think about the opportunities you’re missing out on by not changing things up.

If you’re single this often leads to cute girls less likely saying ‘yes’ when you ask them out.

It can also hold you back from climbing the corporate ladder.

To get to the top, decision makers like your boss need to picture you as a man in charge first.

Of course your skills and expertise are important but looking the part plays a big role too.

Neither Of You Know Any Better

They say ignorance is bliss.

Is that really true though?

The final reason why it might be your friends’ fault for not dressing well is simply because they don’t know any better.

Let’s refer back to the quote, “You’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

Back in my university days partying hard and getting black-out drunk seemed to be the most appealing way to spend weekends.

It made sense. Everyone I was hanging around was doing the exact same thing.

Anyways, who wants to spend a Saturday night at home alone when you’re 21?

After a few years of this I had to quit.

It wasn’t healthy, sustainable, or contributed to the goals I had set for myself (like launching Street Gentlemen).

So how does this apply to style?

Well, if you’re surrounded by guys who don’t care much about their image and how they’re perceived, it’s going to rub off on you too.

It’s a classic case of the blind leading the blind.

According to BusinessInsider.com relationships, “…affect our way of thinking, self-esteem, and our decisions.”

This means that even when we don’t realize it, the people we spend the most time with influence how we behave.

I encourage you to take a second to reflect.

If it feels like your life isn’t attracting the opportunities that you’d like, maybe it’s time to re-evaluate.

This doesn’t mean ditching your friends, they’re likely awesome guys.

It actually means that you can be the one to inspire them to step their style up.

You can be a leader by taking action and educating yourself on how you’d like to be perceived.

That means blazing your own trail and risk being made fun of.

At the end of the day it doesn’t really matter.

Remember, I was once in the same position as you. Taking that risk paid off and now my friends are asking me for style advice.

So what are you waiting for?

Without Christopher Columbus, America never would’ve been discovered.

Without stepping out of stepping out of your comfort zone, your personal style won’t be where you’d like it to be.

Be a trailblazer.
