Why First Impressions Matter More Than You Think

An uphill battle. That's what you'll be facing if the first impression you make is working against you.

You might be wondering, "What does that even mean?"

First impressions lay the foundation for the relationship with the person that you're meeting.

This applies both personally and professionally.

In the past I've noticed that anytime I've made a bad first impression this leads to being viewed by others through a different set of lenses.

I remember showing up to formal events under-dressed and not being taken seriously as a result.

Another example would be going out for drinks with buddies and seeing a cute girl at the bar.

When I finally worked up the courage to strike up a conversation, it was common to be brushed off.

What I've learned through these experiences is that this is the result of making an impression that rubs people the wrong way.

The biggest takeaway is that since 55% of all communication is non-verbal cues like body language and appearance, the way we dress has a direct impact on the message we're trying to send.

This basically means that people will treat us according to the way they perceive us.

Remember that a first impression sets the tone for the rest of your relationship with anybody.

So if the relationship is important to you, it's worth

Another lesson learned from this experience is that once a first impression is formed, it's very difficult to re-shape.

So if you feel like the impression you're making is working against you and not for you keep reading.

How First Impressions Are Formed:

There's two possibilities here.

When a person forms a first impression they're basically trying to decide if your intentions are going to help them or harm them.

Since the average person processes 60,000 thoughts per day, we all tend to make snap judgements whether we realize it or not.

So if advancing you career or improving your dating life is a priority to you, it's important to get first impressions handled.

Why It's Difficult To Recover:

Even once you get to know a person, the first impression you form with them continues to influence how you're viewed long after.

This means that once someone has labelled you as X,Y, or Z, that's how they'll remember you for years.

So no matter how you behave around them moving forward, a bad first impression will always leave a bad taste in their mouth.

The worst part is that when this happens, it limits your opportunities.

What Impact Bad Impressions Have On Your Life:

Anything from a joke that falls flat to a clash of personalities influences the impression you make.

It's human nature to have an off day every once in a while. Something to consider since this will also play a factor.

This ultimately affects your ability to advance your career, increase your earnings, and can even create an unfavourable reputation for yourself.

Last Thoughts:

Remember that your first impression won't be your final impression.

Though you may not have started things off on the right note, there's always a chance to recover.
