How To Choose The Right Watch For Any Occassion
All it takes is one…
One buzzer-beater shot to win a championship.
One more rep on the squat rack before your legs are on fire for the following 2 days.
One watch is all a man really needs in his wardrobe.
How do you decide what that one watch will be?
Imagine packing your bag for an upcoming trip, you have limited space, and can’t bring your entire closet.
How do you decide which ones to take?
The watch that works with your looks on day 1 and 2 may not work with your outfits for day 3,4,and 5.
Having a collection of watches to rotate through on a daily basis is great but it can also complicate things.
Many men’s style experts suggest “matching your metals.”
Which basically means that your watch should match anything else made from a similar material.
This includes zippers on jackets and bags, other jewellery like rings and necklaces, and even accessories like tie-bars and your belt buckle.
This is a good rule of thumb that’s worth sticking to but it can be very restrictive.
Rather than confine yourself to this ‘rule’ your best bet would be to apply it to the major items you’re wearing like watches and belts.
Now that the rules are out of the way let’s talk about what to look for in the one watch.
Something that’s classy enough for the boardroom but not too flashy. Making an impression is important but there’s no need to be “peacocking.”
It’s important to make sure that the watch is in a neutral colour like gold or silver.
Avoid coloured watch faces like red, blue, or green since this will only complicate making looks that seamlessly match.
If you decide to go the leather strap route, keep it either black or brown.
In this case, make sure your watch, belt, and shoes are all within the same colour ‘family.’
Black is easy enough to figure out.
Brown leather on the other hand can be a little bit tricky since there’s so many different shades of it.
Let’s keep it simple — dark brown pieces should only pair with other dark browns. The same applies to light brown.
Starting with one good watch will create a strong foundation of your menswear accessory game.
After going through a phase of wearing a regular rotation of 4 different watches, scaling back to only one gold watch has made getting ready every morning noticeably easier.
Get out there, experiment with different styles, and maybe even try a rotation of 2 to 3 different watches to see how you like it.
