5 Misconceptions That Hold Guys Back From Looking Their Best

Posted on Posted in Style

Stepping out of your comfort zone…

It’s a scary thought, especially when it involves your image.

There’s no hiding it.

If you make a mistake, it may seem hard to recover from.

Thoughts like, “what will people think of me?” or “I’m afraid of looking bad” are very common among the men I’ve helped over the years.

Just remember that failure isn’t fatal.

I’ve come to realize that there’s a few common misconceptions that hold guys back from taking action and stepping up their style.

It’s actually easy for me to teach them how to achieve their goals of feeling confident, stylish, and well put together.

You’re likely wondering why.

Well, these were many of the same thoughts that crossed my mind before I figured out how to dress well.

Taking risks was scary.

What was even more intimidating was feeling like messing up my style would completely ruin my dating life or even career opportunities in the future.

I’ll let you in on a secret…

That wasn’t the case.

Of course I made more than a few mistakes when trying to define my style and trying to look my best.

Picture this: a ski

Like wearing bright yellow t-shirts with a bright orange belt, popping my shirt collars, or wearing size 34 pants when my I’m actually a 30 just because it was a good deal.

It’s safe to say that before I was in ANY position to offer men style advice, I had to overcome many of the same limiting beliefs that hold most men back.

Here’s my recommendations for dealing with the 5 style misconceptions that hold guys back from looking their best
Dressing Well Would Be Nice But It’s Too Expensive

This one’s #1 for a reason.

It’s the most common obstacle that many of my past students have brought up. The belief is that the more you spend, the better you look.

That’s not true. You can actually dress well, own a quality wardrobe, and feel great about not breaking the bank.

The trick is to understand what you’re looking for in terms of quality.

It’s also important to know where you can find well made clothes at a reasonable price.

Just don’t forget, you get what you pay for so there’s a thin line between a bargain and sacrificing quality.

I’m Not Sure Where To Begin

Stepping up your style can be overwhelming.

There’s a TON of information that we all have access to.

The tricky part is figuring out what advice is worthwhile and applies to your specific situation.

It’s no surprise that guys are having trouble figuring out where to begin.

It’d be like someone giving you the keys to a car, knowing where you want to go, but not knowing how to drive.

That Style Looks Great In The Picture, But I’m Not Sure If It Will Work For Me

Similar to the previous misconception.

Without a clear sense of direction, it’s hard to decide if something would look good on you or not.

Of course you can appreciate great style but putting it together can be tricky when you’re not sure what you’re doing.

I’ve found the easiest and fastest way to step up my style was to have someone show me the ropes.

This could be in the form of doing extensive research (which can be time consuming and not always clear), asking my well-dressed friends, or seeking out advice from style experts.

Whatever path you choose to take, you should always start with your end goal in mind.

Once that’s established, it becomes much easier to figure out what steps to take for you to achieve that.

I’m Afraid Of Using The Wrong Combinations

This can be a tricky one.

With so many options and styles constantly changing, it can be hard to keep up.

I’ve found that the best approach is building your wardrobe around neutral colours.

When you’re planning your outfit for the day, avoid wearing too many colours. Doing so can make you look “foolish” or inappropriate for your age.

If this is one of the thoughts holding you back, my recommendation is to start small. Just add a hint of colour to your outfit, see how it feels, and adjust accordingly.

I’ve Tried Changing My Look Before But Didn’t See It All The Way Through

Discouraging, isn’t it?

When you’re trying something new but it doesn’t work out the way you wanted it to from the very beginning.

The key to learning ANY new skill is getting your hands dirty and figuring it out through trial & error.

I wish there was somebody to show me the ropes when I was learning men’s style. It took me nearly 10 years to figure it out but it was all worth it!

Of course there was plenty of embarrassing moments, mistakes made, and money wasted.

I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything.

Last Thoughts:

Once you’re fully comfortable with your appearance, this translates into how you carry yourself.

Stepping out of your comfort zone becomes so much easier when people are complimenting on how good you look.

Yes it is scary at first. There’s a good chance that you may mess up too. Without the proper guidance, the ONLY path to dressing well is through trial and error.

It’s time consuming and often frustrating.
